Jackson’s Journal – The Zero Onederlanders!

Gooooood Morning SuperForest!

One of the most wonderful part of having Zero One, with it’s two fabulous acres of space, is the way that we’re able to use that space to create community, and thus opportunity.

One expression of that is the Zero Onederlanders, as they’ve come to be named. Zero Onederlanders is a play group of two and three year olds and their parents, and they are now coming twice a week to create a beautiful garden.

It’s quite onederful. :)

Asha, Duke, Elena, and Triton learn about worm composting.

Pyramid power!

Some seed pods from the trees caught our eyes.

Momma Genna and Max on the big rope swing.

I get so much joy from the Onederlanders, who come on Wednesdays and Sundays, but my real thrill is watching the parents all come together and play nicely with each other. Grown ups are just over-sized children and it is good to give them some space and encouragement to work together.

The children play nicely and work together effortlessly of course! Yay!

Much love from Zero One!

Goooooood Morning SuperForest!

This week, the lovely Felicia Cowden (of Akamai Backyard fame) made a town run and returned with eight fresh little yellow hen chicks. Four for Akamai and four for Zero One!

Here they are, looking so sweet.

Good Morning, SuperForest!

New gardens are in place. I’m happy to report that the land is starting to feel wilder now. Rougher around the edges. Everywhere I look now there are gardens. And pyramids! We’ve now got three pyramids.

Mea and Augustine are currently on the mainland, but when they return there will be eight of us living here. That number jumps to nine when Mea has her baby in October. Quite a few folks, on not so big a space. There is harmony between us.

Zero One has made no waste in 3 months. We’ve dug a composting toilet and use that for number two, saving our pee for the perennial trees, which love the nitrogen. Today I sorted through the hard plastic, and was pleased to find that we’d accumulated far less that I thought we would. We cook large communal meals, pool our resources and skills, and look out for one another.

The new food gardens have yet to start feeding us, but the land is so rich and abundant that a short walk provides me with all the fresh fruits and vegetables I need. We have coconuts, avocados, papayas, lilikoi (passion fruit), peppers, chayote, and much more, all growing on the land or wild nearby. When the gardens start producing, that’s when we’ll have an insane abundance of food, and use it to further the growth of the permaculture/zero waste community here on the island.

I hope this finds everyone in high spirits.

Love,

Jackson

Jackson’s Journal – I Have Become A Monkey

We just hung a big ol’ rope in a tree at Zero One. I’m up in the tree and I’m not sure I’m ever coming down! Manmonkey!
