Browsing some random searches on Spezify I came across some of these cool pictures. Investigating on flickr, I found these are created using stereographic reprojections of equirectangular panoramas to create tiny planets! Quite a few people have done these, but Alexandre Duret-Lutz (“gadl“) has some particularly nice examples – and, if you like the look of them, he provides how-to info on his Wee Planets page. They reminded me of both the planets encountered by the Little Prince on his travels and the SuperForest Humanifesto.

The Environment is everything that disappears when you close your eyes. If you want to improve it, you must begin with what you see and encounter every single day of your life.

What we see around us is our planet that we can take care of as the little prince does Asteroid B612:

when you’ve finished your own toilet in the morning, then it is time to attend to the toilet of your planet, just so, with the greatest care”

al_st_exupery07_le_petit_prince_1_

“it is only with the heart one can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye”

If you’ve never read The Little Prince, I would second SuperForester Chris’s recommendation - its Antoine de Saint Exupéry’s classic tale of an aviator stranded in the desert who encounters a small prince visiting from the stars and learns about friendship and human nature. You can catch the whole thing online, charming illustrations and all, here.

Jackson’s Journal (9/24/09) – What Is SuperForest?

picture-112(image via henryjenkins.org)

Goooood Morning SuperForest!

Yesterday, my good pal Michelle Bonfils came over to interview me for her vlog. We were talking about SuperForest and she was trying to put into words exactly what I did and what this blog was all about. This was causing her difficulty, as we SuperForesters do a lot. I had a brain flash in my skull-parts.

I said: “To best understand SuperForest, think of it in these terms… I (SuperForester Jackson) am a superhero. I lead an international team of superheroes in an epic battle against negativity, hatred, and sadness.

(It is not easy to say that you are a Superhero, but try it out anyway. Look in a mirror, peer right into your very own eyes, and say: “I am a Superhero.”)

Truly, there is only one person that will make any difference on this planet and that person is you.

No one single superhero will save the day. All of us joined together will save the day.

Become a SuperForester. Become a Superhero. Join us in our joyful quest.

How?

Do these three easy things and everything will change:

Awesome!

I spent most of Tuesday out in Brooklyn with Bee, Superforester Jackie, and the 4fives, and we learned all sort of cool new things! I’m working on hot new posts as you read.

Have an excellent day.

SuperForest Projects: “Let’s Globalize the Humanifesto” (Brand New Updates!)

lets-globalize-the-humanifesto-update-3

Guess what SuperForest?!

As part of operation “Let’s Globalize the Humanifesto”, we’ve received two more beautiful translations! That’s right, the Humanifesto is now available in Japanese and Dutch! And we have the groovy SuperForesters Keiko and Erik to thank for that! A big hug goes out to you both. So that brings our grand total of SuperForest Humanifesto translations to 7! Here they are lined up, baked with love and still steamy from the oven.

-The SuperForest Humanifesto by SuperForester Jackson
-Manifesto dell’Umanita’
translated in Italian by SuperForester Silvia
-El Humanifesto de SuperForest
translated in Spanish by SuperForester Imelda
-Humanifesto
translated in Bahasa Indonesia by SuperForester Anindya
-SuperForest Humanifesto-ja
translated in Hungarian by SuperForester Larissa
-ヒューマニフェスト translated in Japanese by SuperForester Keiko
-SuperForest Humanifest translated in Dutch by SuperForester Erik

The dedication and speedy work that these SuperForesters have demonstrated is flabbergasting. I’m not sure how many times I can say thank you for the amazing energy you’ve all brought to this project but I am guessing no form of written gratitude will suffice. If I knew how, I’d set off fireworks for each of you.

It’s amazing to see these translations streaming in. The exciting part is, this little project is far from over! I’m going to start working on the translation in Farsi with my Aunt Maryam and I know a few other translations are still in the works. Apart from the things that are going on now, operation “Let’s Globalize the Humanifesto” is also looking toward the future. Our final goal is to get the SuperForest Humanifesto translated in as many languages as possible through a direct collaboration with our readers. Who knows? Eventually, we could see the Humanifesto hung up in major plazas around the world, the words will be cited by major world leaders, maybe children will recite portions in school classrooms! The point is, the sky’s the limit! there is no limit!

Which is why we can’t stop this amazing project now. We are still open to receiving all sorts of Humanifesto translations. If you speak a language other than English and would like to do us a grand favor by translating the Humanifesto, go for it! You can contact us here to send us your translated version or if you have any sort of questions in general.

This is amazing. I feel so lucky to be a part of it!

Love,
Carla

SuperForest Redesigned!

Good Morning All!

You may have noticed that the layout of SF has changed recently.
This is actually for an interesting reason. Well, two interesting reasons:

The first is that visually it looks nicer to have more room for our posts to breathe, and the second is that the blogger template is set up so that you have lots of room on either side to sell advertising space.

Since we will NEVER have advertising on SF, that space has been recaptured for our sweet sweet content.

Fun, right? When I go to sites and blogs, there parts of the page I don’t even bother looking at. The same goes for magazines and television.

We’ve gotten so good as a culture at tuning out the advertising, that traditional advertising is dying away. So, an interesting question is: “how then will goods and services be advertised?”

Like this, son!

Much love and hope you like the new look.

The SuperForest Humanifesto

What is going to save the human race?

Please.
Thank you.

Three words that will totally change this planet.
More than solar power. More than recycling. More than wind energy.

Why?

Because if we all started treating the people and things that we interact with every day with respect and compassion, the effects would ripple through every aspect of our lives, transforming society.

Our parents taught us the manners “rule-sets” that we use every day, and as a result, we feel that we have (through years of introspection) begun walking the path towards enlightenment. Our manners dictate the way we treat the external world, the Environment. We feel that it is primarily our manners that dictate our success as humans.

Folks talk about wanting to save the “Environment”, and that conjures up images of bubbling brooks and unspoiled forests. But “the Environment” isn’t just greenery and pretty scenery. It’s our slums, our airports, our houses, our supermarkets.
The Environment is everything that disappears when you close your eyes.

If you want to improve it, you must begin with what you see and encounter every single day of your life.

Before we can set about elevating our present society from a carbon-based one to a solar-electric one, knowing full well that solar-electric decentralized power means a higher quality of life for all, we must first pause and ask ourselves: Why? What is worth saving?

Human Consciousness.

Our gift and curse as humans is our incredible consciousness. We are aware, and that is the greatest and worst thing we’ve got going for us. Because we can clearly see how well we could be living, how politely we could be treating one another, how incredible life could be; we feel it is our duty to delight and inform our fellow humans in the hopes of a better world.

There is no reason every human on Earth could not have access to:
Clean Water
Nutruitious Un-modified Food
Shelter
Education
Open Source Communication
Freedom from Oppression and Fascism

But, as is painfully obvious, most humans don’t have those things.
Most humans don’t have two of the six!

They could, but they don’t.

Why?

Bad Manners.

Nearly every religion this planet has yet produced has as one of its tenets the idea that to be happy, you must treat others as you yourself would hope to be treated.
A failure in this respect is simply bad form.

When a company decides to dump its waste into a river that others downstream use for drinking water, that is bad manners.

When a society chooses to isolate its citizenry in prisons and not offer any chance at rehabilitation, that is bad manners.

When a person decides to walk into a school and open fire on their classmates, that is extremely bad manners.

That is why we MUST START NOW.

All new generations must be schooled in the art of good manners if we are to survive, let alone flourish, as a species.

Try your hardest to treat others as you hope they would treat you, and actively look for ways to help the people around you. Do this from a pure place within you and watch the effects ripple outward!

Why?

Because so few are doing it.

Good manners make you stand out like a struck match in a dark room.

Three Essentials:

Make eye contact with anyone you interact with. Smiling is optional but highly encouraged.
Use the words “Please” and “Thank You” as often as you can.
Seek out ways to improve the lives of others. This can be as small as carrying someones bag up a flight of stairs, or holding a door open.

Do these three things and your life will change immeasurably. And you will begin to change the lives of those who come into contact with you in a measurable and positive way.

We are filled with optimism and hope.

Thank you for reading this.
